How To Write About Your Life Without Blowing It Up
Monday, 10/28 3-5pm ET
One of the biggest questions I get about writing a memoir is: how do I make sure no one is mad at me? Many fear what putting their story out into the world will mean for them and their loved ones. Questions arise like: What is my story versus someone else’s? And: How do I ask permission from those I care about to be included in my essay or book? In this class we’ll do a generative writing exercise and also learn practical tips for figuring out what’s your story to tell and how to tell it. We’ll give ourselves permission to be the authority on our own experiences and learn what to include in our “pour our heart out” documents versus what to leave on the cutting room floor. Come ready to roll up your sleeves and dig in.
LOGISTICS:
This class is best suited for those working on memoir, creative nonfiction, and personal essays.
Class will meet on Zoom for 2 hours.
WHAT YOU’LL WALK AWAY WITH:
Prompts and readings that will inspire you to keep writing
New tools + techniques to use in your writing going forward
Real talk on how to avoid the common pitfalls when writing your own story and what are some options for how to deal with the very real worry about “what will everyone think?”
A creative community to support your story
An invitation to my community of writers for resource sharing, edit exchanges, book/essay recommendations, first dibs on future classes and so much more
